1997 Pontiac Sunfire

VIN 1G2JB1248V7614737

Inspect these first — most-reported on this model

Steering (44 owner reports)Steering should be tight and centered — no play, clunks or wandering. Test at low and highway speed; listen for power-steering whine.
Engine And Engine Cooling (37 owner reports)Check coolant level and color, look for leaks, and confirm the engine reaches normal temperature without overheating.
Electrical System (31 owner reports)Test every electrical feature: windows, locks, infotainment, charging and all lights. Watch for flickering, dead accessories or warning lights.
Service Brakes (28 owner reports)Brakes should feel firm and quiet — no grinding, pulsing or pulling. Check for an ABS light and uneven pad/rotor wear.
Air Bags (28 owner reports)Confirm the airbag light turns on then off at startup — if it stays lit there's a fault (costly, and a safety risk). Check for signs of prior deployment.
Hydraulic (25 owner reports)Have a trusted mechanic inspect this system as part of a pre-purchase inspection.
