Pre-purchase inspection checklist

1997 Toyota Corolla

VIN JTB53AEA1V0197801

Inspect these first — most-reported on this model

Seat Belts (39 owner reports)Check that every belt latches, retracts and locks under a sharp tug, and that none are frayed.
Air Bags (32 owner reports)Confirm the airbag light turns on then off at startup — if it stays lit there's a fault (costly, and a safety risk). Check for signs of prior deployment.
Tires (9 owner reports)Check tread depth, the DOT age date, and that all four tires match with even wear. Look for bulges or cracks.
Vehicle Speed Control (9 owner reports)Test cruise control and throttle response, and watch for any hesitation or unintended acceleration.
Service Brakes (9 owner reports)Brakes should feel firm and quiet — no grinding, pulsing or pulling. Check for an ABS light and uneven pad/rotor wear.
Hydraulic (8 owner reports)Have a trusted mechanic inspect this system as part of a pre-purchase inspection.
