About the Ford Explorer
The Ford Explorer is a range of SUVs manufactured by the Ford Motor Company since the 1991 model year. The first five-door SUV produced by Ford, the Explorer was introduced as a replacement for the three-door Bronco II. As with the Ford Ranger, the model line derives its name from a trim package previously offered on Ford F-Series pickup trucks. In 2020, the Explorer became the best-selling SUV in the American market.

Common problems & what to inspect
Based on all 1,568 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for the 1999 Ford Explorer, here are the most-reported problem areas — and what to check before you buy.
💥 123 involved a crash 🔥 53 involved a fire 🚑 137 reported injuries
🔍 Check tread depth, the DOT age date, and that all four tires match with even wear. Look for bulges or cracks.
🔍 Test wipers, washers, defrosters and all mirrors. Check the windshield for cracks and any camera/sensor for fogging or faults.
🔍 Test cruise control and throttle response, and watch for any hesitation or unintended acceleration.
🔍 Drive through every gear: watch for slipping, hard or delayed shifts, and shudder. Check for transmission/driveline leaks and noises.
🔍 Check coolant level and color, look for leaks, and confirm the engine reaches normal temperature without overheating.
🔍 Test every electrical feature: windows, locks, infotainment, charging and all lights. Watch for flickering, dead accessories or warning lights.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Match the VIN on the dash, door jamb and title — they must be identical.
- Cold-start the engine; listen for knocks and check for blue or white exhaust smoke.
- Test-drive through all gears at low and highway speed — no slipping, shudder or pulling.
- Confirm every warning light clears at startup (none should stay on).
- Check fluids — oil, coolant, transmission — for level, color and leaks.
- Look underneath for rust, fresh undercoating or signs of collision repair.
- Always get an independent pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic.

1FMDU34E1XUC29203 is a structurally valid 17-character VIN with a correct ISO 3779 check digit, assigned to a manufacturer in United States. It decodes to the 1999 Ford Explorer.
Are there safety recalls on the 1999 Ford Explorer?
NHTSA lists 15 recall campaigns for the 1999 Ford Explorer model year. That covers the model year, not this individual car: to see whether a specific vehicle still needs a recall repair, check its VIN on NHTSA.gov or ask a franchised dealer. Recall repairs are free.
What is a fair price for a 1999 Ford Explorer?
Comparable 1999 Ford Explorer listings run roughly $500–$1,900, typically around $1,058 (from 71 comparable vehicles). The full report shows this exact VIN's valuation.
What is the 1999 Ford Explorer safety rating?
NHTSA gives the 1999 Ford Explorer crash-test ratings of frontal 4★, side 5★ (out of 5; this model year pre-dates NHTSA's overall score).
What fuel economy does the 1999 Ford Explorer get?
The 1999 Ford Explorer has U.S. EPA estimates of 14–18 mpg combined, depending on engine and trim (8 versions).
