Certain vehicles with a cracked (but not leaking) fuel pump flange were repaired with butyl tape only under a previous recall (please see Transport Canada Recall 2016-443 / Audi campaign 20W9). This is because replacement fuel pump flanges were not available at the time of repair (the butyl tape was used an interim repair). If the fuel pump flange is not replaced, a fuel leak c…

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the driver frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be p…

On certain vehicles, the fuel pump flange may develop fine cracks or fissures, which could result in a fuel leak. On certain vehicles, a left and/or right A-Pillar trim cover clip may not have been manufactured correctly. This may allow the trim to come loose in a crash where the head protection airbags would deploy. If this happens, it could increase the risk personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will replace the clips in the middle A-pillar covers.

Common problems & what to inspect
Based on all 31 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2009 Audi Q5, here are the most-reported problem areas — and what to check before you buy.
💥 2 involved a crash 🚑 2 reported injuries
🔍 Confirm the airbag light turns on then off at startup — if it stays lit there's a fault (costly, and a safety risk). Check for signs of prior deployment.
🔍 Check for fuel or battery warnings, hard starts and stalling. On a hybrid/EV, confirm charging and range behave normally.
🔍 Listen for knocks or ticking, check for leaks and blue/white exhaust smoke, and make sure it doesn't overheat. No check-engine light should be on.
🔍 Listen for clunks over bumps, check the car sits level, and look for uneven tire wear and worn shocks or struts.
🔍 Inspect for rust, fresh undercoating, mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps and any sign of prior collision or frame repair.
🔍 Have a trusted mechanic inspect this system as part of a pre-purchase inspection.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Match the VIN on the dash, door jamb and title — they must be identical.
- Cold-start the engine; listen for knocks and check for blue or white exhaust smoke.
- Test-drive through all gears at low and highway speed — no slipping, shudder or pulling.
- Confirm every warning light clears at startup (none should stay on).
- Check fluids — oil, coolant, transmission — for level, color and leaks.
- Look underneath for rust, fresh undercoating or signs of collision repair.
- Always get an independent pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic.
