Recall campaign lookup
Turn the code on an owner letter, repair order or auction condition report into the recall behind it. Works with the NHTSA number (like 24V720) or the manufacturer's own campaign code (like Volkswagen's 37M2).
How recall numbers work
Every U.S. safety recall gets an NHTSA campaign number — two digits for the year, a letter for the type (V for vehicles, E equipment, T tires, C child seats) and a three-digit sequence, like 24V720. Manufacturers also give each campaign their own code, which is what usually appears on owner letters, dealer repair orders and auction condition reports. This tool resolves either one from NHTSA's complete recall database, updated weekly.
Safety recalls are repaired free at any franchised dealer. A code that isn't found here may be a service bulletin or customer-satisfaction program rather than a safety recall — those are not filed with NHTSA and repairs may not be free.
