About the Chevrolet Cobalt

The Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car that was introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The Cobalt replaced both the Cavalier and the Toyota-based Geo/Chevrolet Prizm as Chevrolet's compact car. The Cobalt was available as both a coupe and sedan, as well as a sport compact version dubbed the Cobalt SS. Like the Chevrolet HHR and the Saturn ION, it was based on the GM Delta platform.

Common problems & what to inspect

Based on all 583 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, here are the most-reported problem areas — and what to check before you buy.

💥 46 involved a crash 🔥 8 involved a fire 🚑 45 reported injuries

Steering 242 reports

🔍 Steering should be tight and centered — no play, clunks or wandering. Test at low and highway speed; listen for power-steering whine.

Electrical System 128 reports

🔍 Test every electrical feature: windows, locks, infotainment, charging and all lights. Watch for flickering, dead accessories or warning lights.

Fuel/propulsion System 101 reports

🔍 Check for fuel or battery warnings, hard starts and stalling. On a hybrid/EV, confirm charging and range behave normally.

Air Bags 79 reports

🔍 Confirm the airbag light turns on then off at startup — if it stays lit there's a fault (costly, and a safety risk). Check for signs of prior deployment.

Engine 39 reports

🔍 Listen for knocks or ticking, check for leaks and blue/white exhaust smoke, and make sure it doesn't overheat. No check-engine light should be on.

Power Train 31 reports

🔍 Drive through every gear: watch for slipping, hard or delayed shifts, and shudder. Check for transmission/driveline leaks and noises.

Are there safety recalls on the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt?

NHTSA lists 6 recall campaigns for the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt model year. That covers the model year, not this individual car: to see whether a specific vehicle still needs a recall repair, check its VIN on NHTSA.gov or ask a franchised dealer. Recall repairs are free.

What is a fair price for a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt?

Comparable 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt listings run roughly $2,900–$6,800, typically around $4,850 (from 362 comparable vehicles). The full report shows this exact VIN's valuation.

What is the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt safety rating?

NHTSA gives the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt crash-test ratings of frontal 4★, side 4★ (out of 5; this model year pre-dates NHTSA's overall score).
