Common problems & what to inspect
Based on all 17 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 BMW M2, here are the most-reported problem areas — and what to check before you buy.
🔍 Confirm all headlights, brake lights, turn signals and reverse lights work, with no moisture inside the housings.
🔍 Listen for knocks or ticking, check for leaks and blue/white exhaust smoke, and make sure it doesn't overheat. No check-engine light should be on.
🔍 Test every electrical feature: windows, locks, infotainment, charging and all lights. Watch for flickering, dead accessories or warning lights.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Match the VIN on the dash, door jamb and title — they must be identical.
- Cold-start the engine; listen for knocks and check for blue or white exhaust smoke.
- Test-drive through all gears at low and highway speed — no slipping, shudder or pulling.
- Confirm every warning light clears at startup (none should stay on).
- Check fluids — oil, coolant, transmission — for level, color and leaks.
- Look underneath for rust, fresh undercoating or signs of collision repair.
- Always get an independent pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic.

ENGINE
The charge pipe, connecting the cold side of the intercooler to the throttle body failed without warning. The failure point was the clamping point to secure the pipe to the throttle body. This vehicle has no powertrain modifications. The failure happened all of a sudden and as a result, my vehicle lost all power. Luckily, there wasn't anyone behind my car …

INSTRUMENT PANEL HARD TO SEE DURING DAYLIGHT. UNABLE TO SEE SPEED AND TACHOMETER. CAN BE SAFETY ISSUE.
NHTSA ODI #11308603EXTERIOR LIGHTING
POOR INSTRUMENT GAUGE VISIBILITY UNDER SHADE OR OVERCAST. UNABLE TO SEE GAUGE MARKINGS DURING THE DAY BECAUSE THERE IS NO BACK LIGHTING. BMW CHANGED THE INSTRUMENT GAUGES IN THE 2018 MODEL DUE TO THIS ISSUE BUT DID OFFER ANY CHANGES FOR THE 2017 GENERATION.
NHTSA ODI #11191509EXTERIOR LIGHTING
THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GAUGES (SPEED AND RPM) ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO READ UNDER BOTH BRIGHT SUNNY CONDITIONS, AND DARK SHADOW CONDITIONS (IN A TUNNEL, OR IN SHADE). WEARING SUNGLASSES? FORGET SEEING THEM AT ALL. I FIND IT A SAFETY ISSUE WHEN I HAVE TO GLANCE DOWN AT THE GAUGES LONGER THAN NECESSARY AND TAKE MY EYES OFF THE ROAD, AND SQUINT TO DECIPHER WHAT SP…
NHTSA ODI #11130738EXTERIOR LIGHTING
POOR VISIBILITY OF GAUGE CLUSTER IN LOW LIGHT CONDITIONS. MAKES READING THE TACHOMETER AND SPEEDOMETER NEAR IMPOSSIBLE IN CERTAIN LIGHT CONDITIONS/SITUATIONS. THE 2018 MODELS HAVE A NEW GAUGE THAT SOLVES THIS ISSUE. I THINK IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND THE PRE-2018 CARS SHOULD BE RECALLED TO HAVE THIS NEW CLUSTER INSTALLED BY BMW.
NHTSA ODI #11056617EXTERIOR LIGHTING
INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (SPEEDOMETER, TACHOMETER) HAS NO LIGHTING DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS. IT IS A DARK SCREEN MUCH OF THE DAY AND I AM UNABLE TO CLEARLY AND QUICKLY SEE THE IMPORTANT GAUGES THERE, AS DESCRIBED. BMW PROVIDES NO WAY (BACK LIGHTING, ETC) TO MAKE THIS AREA VISIBLE DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE.
NHTSA ODI #11056028UNKNOWN OR OTHER
INSTRUMENT CLUSTER VISIBILITY DURING THE DAYTIME IS HORRIBLE. I AM UNABLE TO SEE HOW FAST I AM GOING, OR THE TACHOMETER READING.
NHTSA ODI #11056150EXTERIOR LIGHTING
DAYTIME GAUGE LIGHTING IS VERY DIM. IT IS HARD TO READ SPEEDOMETER TO TELL YOUR SPEED VERY UNSAFE. HAVE ASKED DEALER AND BMW TO NO AVAIL. I HAVE OWNED 8 BMW CARS AND NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM.
