Recall 01V181000 · manufacturer campaign 601-H
Power Train › Driveline › Universal Joint — Peterbilt · reported 5 Jun 2001 · 27 vehicles potentially affected
What's wrong
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PETERBILT CLASS 7 AND 8 TRACTORS WITH INTERAXLE DRIVESHAFTS PRODUCED AND SUPPLIED BY SPICER DRIVESHAFT, INC. (SDI). THE SDI DRIVESHAFTS WITH UNIVERSAL JOINT CAP BOLTS WERE NOT TIGHTENED TO SDI'S FULL TORQUE SPECIFICATION.
The risk
IF THE DRIVESHAFT ASSEMBLY BECAME SEPARATED FROM THE RETAINING BOLTS, THE INTERAXLE COULD BE EJECTED FROM THE TRUCK'S DRIVING AXLES, RESULTING IN HAZARDOUS DEBRIS. THIS COULD OCCUR WITH LITTLE OR NO PRIOR WARNING TO THE VEHICLE'S DRIVER, AND COULD ALSO RESULT IN LOSS OF VEHICLE POWER.
The fix
DEALERS WILL RE-TORQUING THE RETAINING BOLT FASTENERS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JULY 18, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT PETERBILT AT 1-940-591-4000 OR DANA/SDI AT 1-419-535-4500.
ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).
Vehicles covered by this recall
Whether a particular car is affected and still unrepaired depends on its VIN — a model year being listed does not mean every car of that year is included. Check any VIN free on CarLogs, or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Is this car's recall fixed?
Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer, for the life of the vehicle. A CarLogs report shows the recall status for a specific VIN as reported by the manufacturer — whether it's open or repaired, and whether the fix is available yet.
