Recall 02V193000
Electrical System › Wiring — Jayco · reported 23 Jul 2002 · 258 vehicles potentially affected
What's wrong
ON CERTAIN MINI-MOTORHOMES EQUIPPED WITH A KITCHEN SLIDE-OUT, SOME 120-VOLT ELECTRICAL WIRES UNDERNEATH THE KITCHEN SINK ARE ROUTED IN SUCH A MANNER THAT THEY COULD MAKE CONTACT WITH ABRASIVE COMPONENTS, WHILE THE SLIDE-OUT IS BEING OPERATED AND CHAFE THE PROTECTIVE COVERING CREATING A POSSIBLE SHORT CIRCUIT. IN ADDITION, THERE IS AN EDGE ON THE SLIDE-OUT FLOOR THAT COULD COME IN CONTACT WITH 120-VOLT ELECTRICAL WIRES ROUTED DOWN THROUGH THE MAIN FLOOR ALSO CREATING A POSSIBLE SHORT CIRCUIT.
The risk
IF A SHORT CIRCUIT OCCURS IN EITHER SITUATION, THE CIRCUIT BREAKER WILL TRIP. HOWEVER, IF THE BREAKER FAILS TO TRIP, ARCING FROM THE SHORT CIRCUIT COULD IGNITE ANY COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL OR ITEMS THAT MAY BE STORED IN THE KITCHEN SINK CABINET AND START A FIRE.
The fix
DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND, AS NECESSARY, REPLACE ANY DAMAGED WIRING AND ALSO INSTALL A FLEXIBLE CORD AND PLASTIC WIRING CONDUIT TO PROTECT THE 120-VOLT WIRING AGAINST CHAFING. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 7, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT JAYCO AT 1-877-825-4782.
ALSO, CUSTOMERS CAN CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).
Vehicles covered by this recall
Whether a particular car is affected and still unrepaired depends on its VIN — a model year being listed does not mean every car of that year is included. Check any VIN free on CarLogs, or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Is this car's recall fixed?
Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer, for the life of the vehicle. A CarLogs report shows the recall status for a specific VIN as reported by the manufacturer — whether it's open or repaired, and whether the fix is available yet.
