Recall 03V318000
Equipment — Collins · reported 22 Aug 2003 · 16 vehicles potentially affected
What's wrong
ON CERTAIN SCHOOL BUSES EQUIPPED WITH FLOOR MOUNTED WHEELCHAIR ANCHORAGE POCKETS THAT ARE USED TO ACCOMMODATE AND SECURE WHEELCHAIRS, DURING MANUFACTURING, THE REINFORCEMENT PLATE FOR THE POCKET MAY HAVE BEEN PLACED IN THE WRONG POSITION. THIS WOULD NOT ALLOW THE SCREWS TO BE ATTACHED THROUGH IT.
The risk
IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE ANCHORAGE MAY NOT RETAIN THE WHEELCHAIR. SERIOUS INJURY TO THE WHEELCHAIR OCCUPANT OR OTHER VEHICLE OCCUPANTS MAY RESULT.
The fix
COLLINS WILL REPAIR THE BUSES BY INSERTING A REINFORCEMENT EXTENSION PLATE AND REDRILLING HOLES INTO THIS PLATE FOR THE WHEELCHAIR ANCHORAGE SCREWS TO PASS THROUGH. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS BEGAN SEPTEMBER 3, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT COLLINS AT 1-800-533-1850.
ALSO, CUSTOMERS CAN CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).
Vehicles covered by this recall
Whether a particular car is affected and still unrepaired depends on its VIN — a model year being listed does not mean every car of that year is included. Check any VIN free on CarLogs, or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Is this car's recall fixed?
Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer, for the life of the vehicle. A CarLogs report shows the recall status for a specific VIN as reported by the manufacturer — whether it's open or repaired, and whether the fix is available yet.
