Recall 04V171000
Equipment › Mechanical — Mac · reported 8 Apr 2004 · 310 vehicles potentially affected
What's wrong
ON CERTAIN FRAME AND FRAMELESS DUMP TRAILERS, THE 8-INCH FIVE STAGE TELESCOPIC CYLINDER COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS A "SUPER DUMP", WITH USE THE PACKING NUT ON THE FOURTH STAGE RETAINING THE PLUNGER CAN LOOSEN, BACKING OFF THE FOURTH STAGE. THIS CONDITION, IF NOT REMEDIED, CAN CONTINUE UNTIL THE PACKING NUT BACKS COMPLETELY OFF THE STAGE. IF THIS OCCURS, THERE IS NOTHING TO RETAIN THE FIFTH STAGE (PLUNGER) IN THE ASSEMBLY.
The risk
WHEN THE CYLINDER IS EXTENDED TO ITS MAXIMUM STROKE, THE FIFTH STAGE CAN SEPARATE FROM THE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL OVER THE TRAILER, ALLOWING THE TRAILER TO FREE FALL, POSSIBLY CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
The fix
PARKER HANNIFIN WILL PROVIDE A FIELD MODIFICATION KIT #375 1805 206 TO SECURE THE PACKING NUT IN POSITION FREE OF CHARGE. OWNERS WHO DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT PARKER HANNIFIN AT 1-888-231-7461 OR MAC TRAILER AT 330-823-9190.
CUSTOMERS CAN CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).
Vehicles covered by this recall
Whether a particular car is affected and still unrepaired depends on its VIN — a model year being listed does not mean every car of that year is included. Check any VIN free on CarLogs, or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Is this car's recall fixed?
Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer, for the life of the vehicle. A CarLogs report shows the recall status for a specific VIN as reported by the manufacturer — whether it's open or repaired, and whether the fix is available yet.
