Exterior Lighting › Headlights — Mack · reported 23 Jul 2008 · 265 vehicles potentially affected
What's wrong
MACK IS RECALLING CERTAIN MY 2009 TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH HELLA HEADLAMPS FOR FAILING TO COMPLY WITH THE PHOTOMETRIC OUTPUT REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, 'LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT." THE HEADLAMP'S BULB SHIELD MAY NOT HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY SEATED INTO THE HEADLAMP'S REFLECTOR.
The risk
THIS STANDARD SPECIFIES REQUIREMENTS FOR REQUIRED ORIGINAL AND REPLACEMENT LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT AND THEIR INSTALLATION. THE PURPOSE IS TO REDUCE TRAFFIC CRASHES, DEATHS AND INJURIES RESULTING FROM CRASHES BY PROVIDING ADEQUATE ILLUMINATION OF THE ROADWAY, AND ENHANCING THE CONSPICUITY OF MOTOR VEHICLES ON THE PUBLIC ROADS SO THAT THEIR PRESENCE IS PERCEIVED AND THEIR SIGNALS UNDERSTOOD, BOTH IN DAYLIGHT AND IN DARKNESS OR OTHER CONDITIONS OF REDUCED VISIBILITY.
The fix
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE HEADLAMPS FOR THE SUSPECT DATE CODES AND REPLACE AS REQUIRED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 8, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MACK TRUCKS AT 1-800-528-6586.
MACK RECALL NO. SC0340.CUSTOMERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV.
Vehicles covered by this recall
Whether a particular car is affected and still unrepaired depends on its VIN — a model year being listed does not mean every car of that year is included. Check any VIN free on CarLogs, or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Is this car's recall fixed?
Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer, for the life of the vehicle. A CarLogs report shows the recall status for a specific VIN as reported by the manufacturer — whether it's open or repaired, and whether the fix is available yet.
