Steering — Western Star · reported 5 Nov 2021 · 479 vehicles potentially affected

⚠️ Do Not Drive advisory. NHTSA and the manufacturer advise owners of affected vehicles not to drive them until this recall is repaired.

What's wrong

Daimler Trucks North America, LLC. (DTNA) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Western Star 49X vehicles. The steering shaft may not have been properly installed, causing it to separate from the steering gear.

The risk

Steering shaft separation can result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix

Owners are advised to not drive their vehicles until the inspection has been performed. Dealers will inspect the steering shaft and repair it, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 12, 2022. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA's number for this recall is 905.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Is this car's recall fixed?

Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer, for the life of the vehicle. A CarLogs report shows the recall status for a specific VIN as reported by the manufacturer — whether it's open or repaired, and whether the fix is available yet.
