NHTSA safety recall

Recall 78V148000

Service Brakes, Air › Antilock › Control Unit/module — Chevrolet, GMC · reported 26 Jun 1978 · 1,343 vehicles potentially affected

What's wrong

SOME ANTI-LOCK CONTROLLERS CONTAIN ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS WHICH WERE NOT MADE TO SPECIFICATIONS. IN THE EVENT THESE CONTROLLERS DEVELOP A FAILURE OF ANOTHER INTERNAL ELECTRIC COMPONENT, THE COMBINATION OF DEFECTS MAY CAUSE THE ANTI-LOCK VALVE SOLENOID (A COILED CURRENT CONDUCTING WIRE) TO BE CONTINUOUSLY ENERGIZED, PREVENTING APPLICATION OF THE BRAKES ON THE AXLE INVOLVED. HOWEVER, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM PERFORMANCE ON THE REMAINDER OF THE VEHICLE IS NOT AFFECTED AND THE DRIVER WARNING LIGHT IS NOT ACTUATED.

The fix

THE DEALER WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, INSTALL NEW CONTROLLERS WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNER.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: HEAVY TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH AIR BRAKES.SYSTEM: SERVICE BRAKES; ANTI-LOCK.CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: VEHICLE STOPPING DISTANCES WLL BE INCREASED AND AVEHICLE ACCIDENT COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.

Whether a particular car is affected and still unrepaired depends on its VIN — a model year being listed does not mean every car of that year is included. Check any VIN free on CarLogs, or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Is this car's recall fixed?

Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer, for the life of the vehicle. A CarLogs report shows the recall status for a specific VIN as reported by the manufacturer — whether it's open or repaired, and whether the fix is available yet.
