Recall 78V157000
Service Brakes, Air › Supply › Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings — White Truck · reported 6 Jul 1978 · 140 vehicles potentially affected
What's wrong
THE INVOLVED VEHICLES DO NOT CONFORM TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 121, "AIR BRAKE SYSTEMS", IN THAT SOME DUAL COMPARTMENT AIR RESERVOIRS WERE INSTALLED WITHOUT A DRAIN VALVE IN BOTH COMPARTMENTS. THE OMISSION OF THE DRAIN VALVE COULD CAUSE: 1) THE TANK TO FILL UP WITH WATER DUE TO CONDENSATION, 2) REDUCED AIR VOLUME, 3) CONTAMINATION OF THE AIR SYSTEM WITH WATER, CAUSING MALFUNCTION OF THE RELEASE VALVES, CHECK VALVES, ETC., AND INCREASING THE POSSIBILITY OF AIR SYSTEM COMPONENT FREEZE-UP IN COLD CLIMATES. THESE CONDITIONS COULD RESULT IN MOMENTARY LOSS OF BRAKING ACTION.
The fix
DEALER WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, INSTALL A DRAIN VALVE AT NO COST TO OWNER.
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: HEAVY TRUCKS AND TRACTORS.SYSTEM: SERVICE BRAKES; AIR DRAIN VALVE.CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: LOSS OF BRAKING CAPABILITY COULD CAUSE LOSS OF VEHICLECONTROL AND AN ACCIDENT.
Vehicles covered by this recall
Whether a particular car is affected and still unrepaired depends on its VIN — a model year being listed does not mean every car of that year is included. Check any VIN free on CarLogs, or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Is this car's recall fixed?
Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer, for the life of the vehicle. A CarLogs report shows the recall status for a specific VIN as reported by the manufacturer — whether it's open or repaired, and whether the fix is available yet.
