Recall 79V180000

Steering › Steering Wheel/handle Bar — Autocar, White Truck · reported 1 Aug 1979 · 1,223 vehicles potentially affected

What's wrong

SOME OF THE INVOLVED VEHICLES WERE NOT INSPECTED FOR ADEQUATE CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE STEERING SHAFT AND ITS FIREWALL OPENING. INADEQUATE CLEARANCE COULD RESULT IN THE STEERING COLUMN BECOMING SCORED OR SEVERED BY THE FIREWALL SHEET METAL.

The fix

DEALER WILL INSPECT VEHICLES AND, IF NECESSARY, ENLARGE THE FIREWALL OPENING TO PROVIDE THE MINIMUM 3/8 INCH CLEARANCE FOR THE STEERING SHAFT. ANY SCORED OR CUT SHAFTS WILL BE REPLACED WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNER.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: TRUCKS.SYSTEM: STEERING; STEERING SHAFT.CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: SHOULD THIS OCCUR, LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND AVEHICLE ACCIDENT COULD RESULT.

Whether a particular car is affected and still unrepaired depends on its VIN — a model year being listed does not mean every car of that year is included. Check any VIN free on CarLogs, or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Is this car's recall fixed?

Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer, for the life of the vehicle. A CarLogs report shows the recall status for a specific VIN as reported by the manufacturer — whether it's open or repaired, and whether the fix is available yet.
