Recall 79V182000
Parking Brake › Driveline — Flxible · reported 3 Aug 1979 · 368 vehicles potentially affected
What's wrong
PARKING BRAKES ON THE INVOLVED VEHICLES MAY NOT RELEASE OR RELEASE COMPLETELY. THIS COULD LEAD TO ABNORMAL HEATING OF THE ROCKWELL PARKING BRAKE DRUM DURING VEHICLE OPERATION. THIS MAY CAUSE BURNING OR THERMAL CRACKING OF THE DRUM SURFACE. THE WEAKENED DRUM THEN BECOMES SUBJECT TO FAILURE UNDER THE CENTRIFUGAL FORCES OF THE PROPSHAFT ROTATION WHICH PULL THE DRUM OUTWARDS WHEN IT IS ROTATING RAPIDLY AROUND THE PROPSHAFT CENTER.
The fix
THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE EXISTING BRAKE DRUM WITH ROCKWELL PART #3219-H-4350, WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNER.
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: BUSES.SYSTEM: SERVICE BRAKES; PARKING BRAKE, DRUM.CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: IF SUCH A FAILURE OCCURS WHEN THE PROPSHAFT ISOPERATING, THE DRUM CAN DISINTEGRATE WITH AN EXPLOSIVE FORCE. THIS COULD CAUSELOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL AND AN ACCIDENT.
Vehicles covered by this recall
Whether a particular car is affected and still unrepaired depends on its VIN — a model year being listed does not mean every car of that year is included. Check any VIN free on CarLogs, or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Is this car's recall fixed?
Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer, for the life of the vehicle. A CarLogs report shows the recall status for a specific VIN as reported by the manufacturer — whether it's open or repaired, and whether the fix is available yet.
