Recall 80V148000
Steering › Linkages › Tie Rod Assembly — International Harvester · reported 17 Nov 1980 · 19,500 vehicles potentially affected
What's wrong
THE NUTS WHICH FASTEN THE TIE ROD ENDS TO THE STEERING ARMS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN TIGHTENED TO THE SPECIFIED 150 FT-LB TORQUE. INSUFFICIENTLY TIGHTENED TIE ROD END NUTS COULD LOOSEN, BREAK OFF THE LOCKING COTTER PIN, AND ALLOW THE TIE ROD TO DISENGAGE FROM THE STEERING ARM.
The fix
THE DEALER WILL REMOVE THE LOCKING COTTER PIN, TIGHTEN THE NUT TO 150 FT-LBS AND REINSTALL THE COTTER PIN. BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT TIE ROD ENDS WILL BE TIGHTENED. THIS WILL BE DONE AT NO CHARGE.
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: HEAVY TRUCKS.SYSTEM: STEERING; TIE ROD END TO STEERING ARM NUTS.CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: THIS COULD CAUSE LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL, WITHOUT PRIORWARNING, AND AN ACCIDENT.
Vehicles covered by this recall
Whether a particular car is affected and still unrepaired depends on its VIN — a model year being listed does not mean every car of that year is included. Check any VIN free on CarLogs, or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Is this car's recall fixed?
Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer, for the life of the vehicle. A CarLogs report shows the recall status for a specific VIN as reported by the manufacturer — whether it's open or repaired, and whether the fix is available yet.
