Recall 84V121000
Suspension › Rear — Dolphin · reported 5 Oct 1984 · 54 vehicles potentially affected
What's wrong
VEHICLES WERE MANUFACTURED WITH REAR AXLES AND REAR BEARINGS THAT ARE INADEQUATE FOR THE LOAD THAT IS APPLIED ON THEM. CARRYING HEAVY LOADS AND TRAVELING ON ROUGH ROADWAYS MAY CAUSE DETERIORATION OF THE BEARINGS. WHEN THE BEARINGS BECOME WORN, HEAT BUILDS UP IN THE AXLE AND BEARING, AND MAY RESULT IN A BROKEN AXLE.
The fix
THE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY INCLUDING WHEELS AND TIRES WILL BE REPLACED.
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MULTIPURPOSE PASSENGER VEHICLES AND MOTOR HOMES ASSEMBLEDON CHEVROLET S-10 AND GMC S-15 TRUCK CHASSIS.SYSTEM: POWER TRAIN; REAR AXLE AND AXLE BEARINGS.CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: A BROKEN AXLE WOULD DETACH THE DUAL REAR WHEELS,POSSIBLY CAUSING LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL AND AN ACCIDENT.NOTE: WHEN A WHEEL BEARING BEGINS TO FAIL, IT USUALLY PRODUCES AN AUDIBLEWHINING AND GRINDING NOISE. IF YOU HAVE HEARD SUCH A SOUND, OR START HEARINGIT, HAVE THE BEARINGS INSPECTED IMMEDIATELY.
Vehicles covered by this recall
Whether a particular car is affected and still unrepaired depends on its VIN — a model year being listed does not mean every car of that year is included. Check any VIN free on CarLogs, or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Is this car's recall fixed?
Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer, for the life of the vehicle. A CarLogs report shows the recall status for a specific VIN as reported by the manufacturer — whether it's open or repaired, and whether the fix is available yet.
