NHTSA safety recall
Recall 86V026000
Steering › Linkages › Arm › Idler And Attachment — International Harvester · reported 14 Jan 1986 · 120,292 vehicles potentially affected
What's wrong
STEERING ARM MAY CRACK AFTER REPEATED FULL LOCK TURNS DUE TO THE LACK OF END-OF-TRAVEL RELIEF FEATURES. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL WOULD BE EXPERIENCED IF CRACKS EXPAND TO COMPLETE FRACTURE OF THE ARM, AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
The fix
REPLACE STEERING ARM WITH A REDESIGNED STRENGTHENED ARM.
SYSTEM: STEERING ARM. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: TRUCKS AND BUSES EQUIPPED WITH POWER STEERING AND 5,000 TO 8,000 LB. CAPACITY FRONT AXLES.

Whether a particular car is affected and still unrepaired depends on its VIN — a model year being listed does not mean every car of that year is included. Check any VIN free on CarLogs, or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Is this car's recall fixed?
Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer, for the life of the vehicle. A CarLogs report shows the recall status for a specific VIN as reported by the manufacturer — whether it's open or repaired, and whether the fix is available yet.
