Recall 90V027000
Service Brakes, Air › Antilock — Strick · reported 12 Feb 1990 · 493 vehicles potentially affected
What's wrong
AN INCORRECT RATIO RELAY VALVE WAS INSTALLED IN THE BRAKE SYSTEM AND THE PRESSURE PROTECTION VALVE WAS INSTALLED INCORRECTLY.
The risk
INCORRECT INSTALLATION OF THE VALVES WOULD REDUCE THE AVAILABLE RESERVOIR CAPACITY BY ONE HALF, RESULTING IN LOSS OF NORMAL BRAKING FUNCTION AND COULD CAUSE APPLICATION OF THE SPRING BRAKES, WHICH COULD EFFECT THE OPERATION OF THE TRUCK AND RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT.
The fix
REPLACE THE BRAKE RELAY VALVE AND RE-ORIENT THE PRESSURE PROTECTION VALVE.
SYSTEM: BRAKE RELAY VALVE, FMVSS 121.VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: TANDEM AXLE VAN TRAILERS.CAUTION: DRIVING IN CIRCUMSTANCES WHICH WILL REQUIRE NUMEROUS BRAKE APPLICATIONS[E.G., DESCENDING LONG STEEP GRADES IN A SHORT TIME] SHOULD BE AVOIDED UNTIL THE DEFECT IS REMEDIED.WARNING OF THE REDUCED RESERVOIR PRESSURE SHOULD BE HEEDED FOR LOSS OF NORMAL BRAKING FUNCTION, AND PRECAUTION TAKEN.
Vehicles covered by this recall
Whether a particular car is affected and still unrepaired depends on its VIN — a model year being listed does not mean every car of that year is included. Check any VIN free on CarLogs, or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Is this car's recall fixed?
Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer, for the life of the vehicle. A CarLogs report shows the recall status for a specific VIN as reported by the manufacturer — whether it's open or repaired, and whether the fix is available yet.
