Service Brakes, Hydraulic › Antilock/traction Control/electronic Limited Slip — Volvo · reported 18 Aug 1997 · 278 vehicles potentially affected
What's wrong
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CLASS 8 HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS. A WIRE THAT CONNECTS THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECU) TO THE AUTOMATIC BRAKING CONTROL SYSTEM (ABS) CONTROLLER IS MISSING. THE ENGINE BRAKE CAN LOCK UP THE REAR AXLE WHEELS ON A SLICK PAVEMENT, AND THE ABS WOULD NOT PREVENT THE LOCK UP.
The risk
IF THE WHEELS LOCKED UP, THE POTENTIAL FOR A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR.
The fix
DEALERS WILL INSTALL THE MISSING WIRING CIRCUIT ON THE ABS BRAKES.
NOTE:OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL BEGIN BY THE END OF SEPTEMBER 1997. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT VOLVO TRUCK AT 1--910-393-2000. ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-800-424-9393.
Vehicles covered by this recall
Whether a particular car is affected and still unrepaired depends on its VIN — a model year being listed does not mean every car of that year is included. Check any VIN free on CarLogs, or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Is this car's recall fixed?
Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer, for the life of the vehicle. A CarLogs report shows the recall status for a specific VIN as reported by the manufacturer — whether it's open or repaired, and whether the fix is available yet.
