Recall 98V294000
Fuel System, Gasoline › Delivery › Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings — BMW · reported 10 Nov 1998 · 700 vehicles potentially affected
What's wrong
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MOTORCYCLES. IF THE ENGINE BACKFIRES DURING THE STARTING PROCESS, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR EITHER THROTTLE BODY TO LOOSEN IN ITS MOUNT, OR TO DISCONNECT FROM ITS MOUNT. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE FUEL LINE COULD BE DAMAGED OR THE LINE AND INJECTOR COULD SEPARATE FROM EACH OTHER, CAUSING FUEL LEAKAGE.
The risk
FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE CAN RESULT IN A FIRE.
The fix
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL DISTRIBUTION UNIT. IN ADDITION, THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE THROTTLE BODY AND THE AIR INLET TUBE WILL BE SECURED WITH TWO SCREWS TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE HOSE OR INJECTOR SHOULD A BACKFIRE OCCUR.
OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN APRIL 1, 1999. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117, OPTION #5. ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).
Vehicles covered by this recall
Whether a particular car is affected and still unrepaired depends on its VIN — a model year being listed does not mean every car of that year is included. Check any VIN free on CarLogs, or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Is this car's recall fixed?
Recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer, for the life of the vehicle. A CarLogs report shows the recall status for a specific VIN as reported by the manufacturer — whether it's open or repaired, and whether the fix is available yet.
