What's wrong

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: VAN TRAILERS. THESE TRAILERS DO NOT COMPLY WITH REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 223, "REAR IMPACT GUARDS." THE REAR IMPACT GUARDS SHOULD BE REINFORCED TO IMPROVE THEIR PERFORMANCE IN COLLISIONS.

The risk

IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE REAR IMPACT GUARDS MAY NOT PROPERLY PROTECT THE VEHICLE.

The fix

OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A FREE REINFORCEMENT KIT AND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS.

OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN OCTOBER 29, 1999.OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HPA MONON AT 1-800-231-6413.ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).
